Accomplishments
I was originally sworn in as a board member on December 2, 2021. Dr. Hamlett had been the superintendent since January 1, 2021. In partnership with her leadership team, and my fellow board members (nine different people), we’ve accomplished a lot.
- Vice Chair: 2022-2023, Chair: 2023-2024, Chair: 2024-current
- Board structure reorganization into three committees: (Note: Monthly committee meetings are virtual, live-streamed, and recorded.)
- Student Success Committee (aka, Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment). This committee operationalizes our Portrait of a Graduate (“…providing…all students with the knowledge, experiences, and opportunities necessary for them to develop the competencies required for success in school, the workforce, and in life.”)
- Finance, Facilities, and Operations Committee. This committee regularly reviews budget development and implementation, monitors the Capital Investment Plan, all facility needs and improvements, and routine operational matters.
- Policy Committee. A major board function is constant policy development and/or revision. All policy recommendations are brought to the full board for consideration and adoption.
- School safety protocols, training, and school building safety improvements.
- Development of the district’s first Curriculum and Instruction Management Plan (CIMP) as a result of a major curriculum audit. Believe it or not, our district did not have a written curriculum for 50% of our courses, or subjects (K-12). In one-half of all courses, the curriculum was essentially teacher specific. Implementing the plan is a multi-year process toward achieving an equitable and equal access to a rigorous curriculum. See the reverse side of this flyer for additional information.
- Capital Investment Plan (10-Year Plan) – The plan is focused, deliberate, transparent, and updated annually.
- Strategic Plan 2027: We want our students “to become skilled communicators, effective collaborators, critical thinkers, adaptable individuals, and ethical and empathetic citizens.”
- Transportation Improvements – increased number of drivers, route consolidations, bonus pay.
- Teacher salary supplement increase. Classified staff salary increase and pay scale restructuring.
- Bond Plan development and implementation. Plan calls for replacing three aging elementary schools (Carrboro ES, Estes Hills ES, FPGB.)
- Supported our LGBTQ+ students and staff by saying “NO” to parts of the so-called Parent’s Bill of Rights. Currently working deliberately to support our immigrant families.
